Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee had the pleasure of welcoming a delegation from Samarkand State University (SSU), Uzbekistan, during their visit to the campus from 13–21 August 2026, under the existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two institutions, to strengthen academic, research, and institutional collaboration.
The visiting delegation comprised Prof. Safarboy Haydarov, Prof. Shokhrukh Ravshanov, Prof. Nilufar Sabirova; Mr. F. Azamat, Doctor of Science Researcher; and Mr. K. Ilyos, Third-Year Bachelor’s Student, all from Samarkand State University, Uzbekistan.
During their visit, the delegation interacted with Prof. KARUN RAWAT, Dean of International Relations, IIT Roorkee; Prof. Sumit Sen, Head, Department of Hydrology; and Prof. Kritika Kothari, Department of Water Resources Development and Management (WRDM), Coordinator: Global Partnerships & International Mobility Programs, to explore opportunities for strengthening academic, research, institutional, and student–faculty exchange collaborations, as well as developing joint research initiatives and capacity-building programmes.
A formal meeting was held in the Board Room of the James Thomson Building, chaired by Prof. K. K. Pant, Director IIT Roorkee, in the presence of Prof. Karun Rawat, Dean, IR; Prof. Sumit Sen; and Prof. Kritika Kothari. The discussions focused on advancing the initiatives under the MoU and Letter of Intent signed in 2024, particularly the proposed Joint Master’s Degree Programme (JMDP), along with potential collaboration in hydrology, water resources management, hydrogeology, hydrometeorological monitoring, student and faculty exchange, and joint research.
As part of the academic and research engagement, the delegation visited the Department of Water Resources Development and Management, where they interacted with the HoD, Prof. Thanga Raj Chelliah, and faculty members and were introduced to the department’s ongoing research activities, academic programmes, and laboratory facilities. The delegation also participated in academic activities organised by the Department of Hydrology, including lectures, laboratory visits, and interactions with faculty members, gaining insights into the department’s research and technical expertise in hydrology and water resources.
The delegation further explored potential collaboration in the development of hydrogeological and hydrometeorological monitoring stations at Samarkand State University, along with opportunities for joint research, knowledge exchange, and capacity-building initiatives.
