Meeting between Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IITR)

A web-meeting was organized between Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA and Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee on January 12, 2022 to discuss opportunities for collaborations between the two institutes. Ms Nureen Das, MIT-India Managing Director, Prof P Arumugam, Dean of International Relations and Dr Shantanu Wahal, Executive Officer – International Relations at IIT Roorkee participated in the meeting.

Ms Nureen apprised about the objectives of MISTI (MIT International Science and Technology Initiatives) program and how program promotes collaborations between MIT and other global institutes.  She also discussed several India specific initiatives and ongoing research work where IIT Roorkee and MIT can develop institutional-level partnerships.

Prof. P Arumugam, Dean of International Relations at IIT Roorkee conveyed the proposal for limited number of top ranked (JEE) students of IIT Roorkee spending a semester at MIT, with IIT Roorkee bearing the expenses.  He gave a snap-shot of ongoing research activities at IITR along with brief description of state of art facilities to carry out some of the most advanced research in collaboration with global partners. He also apprised about various activities that are planned to commemorate of 175th year anniversary at IITR, and explained how some of these activities could seed a long-term partnership between two institutes.

Following are the key-points discussed in the meeting-

  1. A thematic joint workshop/seminar to be organized with faculty members of MIT and IITR in identified areas of research.
  2. Faculty members of the two institutes to be encouraged to jointly write research proposals for MIT seed funding with a broader aim to develop joint proposals for global grants. More information to be shared by Ms Nureen on Seed Grant at MIT.
  3. IIT Roorkee to invite group of MIT students and their mentor (PhD scholar) for a tour of the institute during their annual visit to India.
  4. Ms Nureen to discuss or explore internally the possibility of student exchange (2-3 top rankers IITians) from IITR to MIT for a semester of studies at MIT on self-sponsored basis.
