Embracing Diversity and Discovery: My Journey with Co-PREPARE in Potsdam

As I sit down to reflect on my recent journey as part of the Co-PREPARE exchange program, a wave of gratitude washes over me. The past few months spent in Potsdam have been nothing short of transformative, both personally and academically. From navigating cultural nuances to delving into research on landslides in the Indian Himalayan Region, every moment has been a learning experience brimming with insights and discoveries.

The Co-PREPARE project, a collaborative endeavor between the University of Potsdam (UP) and the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, aimed to foster joint hazard research. For me, being part of this initiative was a privilege I will forever cherish.

My journey commenced in October 2023, as I embarked on a path filled with new challenges and opportunities. The initial adjustment to the cold climate of Potsdam was indeed a test, but with time, I found myself acclimatizing and embracing the welcoming atmosphere of UP. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Prof. Ankit Agarwal and the entire Co-PREPARE team for their unwavering support, especially during the visa process, which proved to be a last-minute hurdle swiftly overcome, thanks to their assistance. I am very thankful to Prof. Rahul Dev Garg as my supervisor from the Indian side for giving me this opportunity.

Beyond the realm of academia, my time in Potsdam offered me a chance to immerse myself in the vibrant cultural tapestry of the region. From participating in Qi Gong sessions to joining the University Orchestra and Choir, I found avenues to nourish both mind and soul.

My desire on weekends was to delve deep into the heart of Brandenburg. I embarked on numerous hikes through picturesque forests, experiencing the magic of snowfall for the first time in December—a memory etched forever in my mind. Evenings after work were spent cycling in the city and visiting lakes. Exploring the streets of Berlin and Potsdam allowed me to witness the rich history and dynamic energy of these vibrant cities.

In terms of research, I encountered initial challenges stemming from my limited coding background. However, with the unwavering support of my supervisors and peers, I found myself making steady progress. Weekly meetings with Dr. Ugur Öztürk provided me with invaluable insights and guidance, while attending Dr. Wolfgang Schwanghart’s class on spatial statistics and modeling expanded my academic horizons.

As I bid farewell to Potsdam, I am filled with a profound sense of gratitude to the Almighty for keeping me safe and guiding me through this enriching journey. The friendships forged, the knowledge gained, and the memories created will remain etched in my heart for years to come. My experience with Co-PREPARE has not only broadened my academic perspective but has also enriched my understanding of diverse cultures and the power of collaboration.

In conclusion, my time in Potsdam has been a testament to the transformative power of cross-cultural exchange and collaborative research. As I step into the next chapter of my career, I carry with me the lessons learned and am ready to embrace new challenges and opportunities with renewed vigor and enthusiasm.

"Vielen Dank, Co-PREPARE für alles!"
