IIT Roorkee Delegation in Potsdam: Research & Collaborations with German Institutes (Coordinated by the Indo-German COPREPARE Team, March 24-29, 2022)

Meeting at University of Potsdam

Professor Oliver Günther, President of the University of Potsdam (UP) invited a delegation from IIT Roorkee consisting of Dean of Finance, Dean of International Relations, Head of the Departments and Faculty members for visiting Potsdam. The international project Co-PREPARE: Collaborative Indo-German Project on Estimating and Predicting NAtural Hazards in the Himalayan Region” jointly funded by DAAD (Germany) and University Grant Commission (India) facilitated the entire visit. Professor Oliver Günther also invited several stakeholders to the joint meeting viz German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) and Institute to maximize output, broaden collaboration and to stabilize synergies between partner universities. For Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS), Professor Oliver Gunther invited several stakeholders from these universities to conduct a joint meeting, on March 25, 2022 at the Senatssaal, University of Potsdam.

The President of the University of Potsdam, greeted Indian delegation team and thanked them for responding quickly to his invitation even during the anomalous time of the COVID-19 pandemic. He also appreciated that the cooperation between the universities (UP and IITR) is growing exponentially.

Prof. P. Arumugam (Dean of International Relations IITR & Co-PREPARE Co-PI), presented the long-standing contributions of IIT Roorkee in all the domains and existing international partnerships, MoUs, Dual Degree and Joint Degree PhD Program, which was appreciated by all the stakeholders.

Prof. Ankit Agarwal (Co-PREPARE PI) presented the academic network set-up between IITR & UP under the framework of CoPREPARE and informed that joint publications (45+), joint master thesis (05), joint PhDs (04), joint international conferences (02), joint workshops (02), summer school (1) and expert UDAN lectures (17) had been conducted. All the stakeholders appreciated the progress made on internationalization and proposed to enhance their cooperation. For further strengthening the cooperation between IITR and UP, the roadmap was discussed in details. Prof. Dr Annegret Thieken (UP, NatRiskChange) shared a glimpse of excellence cluster funding with prospects of IIT Roorkee being part of it. During the meeting, Prof. Agarwal explained the blueprint to further expand the academic network to strengthen the research network by targeting suitable funding such as “International Research Training Group”.

Moreover, it was discussed that IITR & UP are not only committed to synergic and collaborative research but also the dissemination of such research and knowledge products to a larger scientific/knowledge-seeking group. Both institutions (IITR and UP) agreed to make joint efforts for global engagements by organizing special sessions in various upcoming international conferences, special issues in a journal and through joint conferences and workshops.

Meeting at Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK)

IITR delegation also visited PIK. Later, Prof. Jurgen Kurths and Dr Norbert Marwan hosted the delegation for a tour at PIK and apprised the delegation about the research activities.

Meeting at Embassy


The IITR delegation was invited to the Indian Embassy at Berlin to meet Ambassador Mr. Parvathaneni Harish and counsellor Dr Madhusudan Reddy Nandineni (Science & Technology). Mr. Parvathaneni Harish shared the government mandate to boost the Indo-German cooperation in science and technology. Being one of premier institute in India, IITR presented existing Indo-German cooperation in research and educational activities, and suggested different ways IITR can promote the same. The proposals from IITR was well appreciated and both parties agreed to work further for the better future.
