Dual/Joint Degree Programme

Dual/Joint Doctoral Degree Programme with Foreign Universities

Collaborative Doctoral Programmes with foreign universities/institutes shall be initiated within the models suggested below. The MoUs with the interested institutes shall be signed with additional clauses decided on a case-to-case basis by the Institute Research Committee.

Models for Collaborative Doctoral Programmes with Foreign Universities

  1. Joint Degree
    1. Students must meet the admission requirements and need to complete the degree requirements of their home institution.
    2. They will receive the degree only from their home institution with a remark that the program has been completed jointly with the host institution.
  2. Dual Award Degree
    1. Students must meet the admission requirements and complete the degree requirements of both the institutions.
    2. They receive a separate degree from both the institutions.

Steps for enrolling IITR students in the Joint/ Dual Doctoral Degree Program

Ideally a student in their first year of degree program should be enrolled in the Joint/ Dual Doctoral Degree Program, however, enrolment at a later stage could also be considered if both the supervisors agree and recommend to their respective administrative offices.

  1. Concerned student’s supervisor should approach a faculty member at the partner university to get their consent to Co-supervise the student.
  2. Once the consent from the partner faculty member is received, the IITR supervisor should inform the IR office of their intent to enroll the student in a particular Joint/ Dual Doctoral Degree Program through the submission of ‘Requisition Form’ for student enrollment for JDDP via IR portal. https://ir.iitr.ac.in/IR_Panel/
  3. IR Office will verify student enrollment request, academic records, transcripts, communication with co-supervisor and number of spots available with partner university in the current semester.
  4. Subsequently, Dean IR will nominate the student for specific JDDP and recommend the same to academic Office via email.
  5. IR office will then connect the concerned faculty member and student with the administrative contact at the partner university who will then inform the student about the next steps to be followed to get registered in JDDP at the partner university.
  6. The IITR supervisor will fill the ‘Recommendation for Enrolment of Student in Joint/Dual Ph.D. Program’ form, available on IR website and will submit it to the Academic office for NOC through email with copy to Department/ Centre Head, Chairman DRC/SRC, International Relations office. https://ir.iitr.ac.in/DualJointProgramme
  7. Student and their supervisor must follow up with the partner administrative office to make sure all the required steps are completed. They must also keep Department/ Centre Head, Chairman DRC/SRC, International Relations office and Academic Affairs office at IITR in their email conversations and seek their help whenever required.

Joint supervision in project/dissertation/thesis

No agreement is required for this purpose. For Bachelors and Masters students, the supervisor shall send an email to our office for the records about international collaboration.

PhD students of other institutes/universities can choose an IIT Roorkee faculty as their co-supervisor. The IITR faculty should follow the guidelines provided here and send the forms to arevaluation@iitr.ac.in with a copy to office.ir@iitr.ac.in.

PhD students of IIT Roorkee can include an external supervisor (inclusive of an international supervisor) through the Finalization of Supervisors Form. Addition of a supervisor at a later stage (but before their comprehensive examination) is possible through the special SRC recommendation form (Point 8 A).
